Peace Like A River Counseling: FAQ's

FAQ's

Here are some common introductory questions…

1.  I’ve never seen a counselor before.  What should I expect?  How do I get started?
The decision to pursue professional counseling often generates a number of questions regarding the actual process.  Our web site is designed to give you an idea of who we are and what we do, thereby answering some of your initial questions. In the first appointment, your counselor will discuss with you your reasons for seeking help, ask questions about your personal history and background and discuss what results you hope to achieve. In subsequent sessions, it is our goal to assist you in working through your presenting problem, as well as explore the root causes of your struggles.
If you decide to pursue counseling with us, we invite you to call our office to schedule an appointment. When you contact us, you will be provided with some instructions on how that process works.  We understand that professional counseling is most often pursued during a time of crisis and/or distress. Therefore, we will make every effort to respond promptly to your call, answer any questions you might have, and schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

2.  How long should I expect to be in counseling?   How long will this take?
That will always depend on the particular person/couple and the particular circumstances. Generally, the average length of time in counseling is 5-10 sessions.  Frequency of sessions will depend upon a number of factors- individual needs, client and counselor’s availability, and finances. Our goal is to get you feeling and functioning as close to normal as soon as possible.

3.  How long is each session?
Sessions are 50 minutes in length, unless previously scheduled otherwise.

4.    How much will it cost?
The Bible tells us that a worker is worthy of his wages. At Peace Like A River Counseling, we see our work as ministry, but that the ministry has value. Everyone who comes to us will be ministered to regardless of their ability to pay. However, in this nation, everyone has the ability to pay something and so we ask that you pay for your session in advance, based on your ability to do so. Counselors throughout the Little Rock area typically receive from $75.00 to $125.00 per session. If you have the ability to pay full rate we ask that you do so. You can remit cash, write a check to PLARC, or pay via credit card.
If you plan on filing with your insurance company, we ask that you check before scheduling to assure we are in-network with your particular plan.  We ask that a 24-hour notice be given for cancelled appointments.  Failure to do so, or a missed appointment, may result in a fee.

5.  Do you accept insurance?
It is up to the client to investigate insurance coverage. Our policy is for the client to pay at the time of the visit and be reimbursed by their insurance carrier.

6.  Do you accept Medicaid, Medicare or ARKids?
We will accept all three of those coverage plans.

7.  Does anyone on your staff prescribe medication?
None of our staff can prescribe medication.

8.  Does anyone on your staff provide psychological testing and assessments?,
We do not do psychological testing or assessments, but we do run screenings for marital intimacy, anger management, anxiety, alcoholism, depression, stress and schizophrenia, as well as temperament screenings for potential employees.

9.  How does confidentiality work in a professional counseling context?
Counseling often involves sharing sensitive and personal information. In recognition of this, ethical guidelines, as well as state and federal laws, require that all interactions between a client and Peace Like A River Counseling remain confidential. This includes your records, content of your sessions and our appointment schedule. Our staff will take the utmost care to protect your privacy and confidentiality. The only three exceptions to confidentiality are 1) a client requests in writing (Release of Information) that their counseling records be shared with a specific individual or another professional, 2) a client poses clear and imminent danger to themselves or to others, or 3) a client discloses that physical or sexual abuse or neglect has occurred to a minor or an elderly person.

10. Where is your office located?

The office is located inside First Baptist Church of Little Rock at 62 Pleasant Valley. Enter through Door #6 which is in the lower parking lot on the gymnasium side. Take the elevator to the second floor and we are in the first office on the left.
